New Year’s Transformation

It’s that time again. Everyone’s social media feeds are full of “New year, new me” status updates. Ambitions are high to start the New Year on a great note. I too enjoy setting goals to help myself grow as an individual.

I don’t want to just write about all the new goals you can set for yourself in the New Year. Quite frankly, there are too many to list! Every person is different and wants to better them self in a different way. For the past few months I have been really into reading all the amazing home decor blogs out there. Every one of the blogs that I have come across are inspiring and have made me think about my home in a different way than before. (I know you are wondering why I am blabbing on about myself… don’t worry there is a moral to this story!) Reading blog after blog on home decor, I have developed an interest in it. What better way to start the New Year?! I am challenging myself to re-do a room in my apartment. This is going to be a fun project!

Since football season is just about over, I am going to need a new hobby to take over my Sundays. This is something I have never really done before since this is really my first apartment, I have mostly passed-down items from my older sister, family and friends. I really want to take the time to make my place “my home” and add make some changes that will scream “Briana!” I have chosen the kitchen as the room to start. Here are some inspiration pictures I have:

I am a big fan of HGTV! The two images are very different from each other, but I do really like them both. I am not looking to copy them, but instead have them act as inspiration. I am looking to create something totally different that allows my friends and family to see my personality come alive in this room. I have a decent sized eat in kitchen. We spend hours around the table, sharing lots of laughs and wine! Since this is the most popular room in the house I want to make it warm, inviting, and comfy.

I probably will not be painting since I am a renter, but I believe I can still transform the place. Since this is something I haven’t done before I am super excited. There is a lesson to be learned. Not all new year’s goals have to be about saving or making more money, losing weight to be the better version of you. I challenge you too, to do something you have never done before. At the end of this project I know I am going to be proud of the outcome and to know I can do something I thought I couldn’t do before.

I know things like this will not happen overnight. With that being said I plan to post an update piece and a finished room piece. I will be sure to post all items used in the transformation! I hope this piece inspires you to think outside the box and try your hand at something new. You never know it might be something you love!

Stay Tuned!

Big things are coming in 2017!

No tricks here…just treats!

Adorable Halloween graphic courtesy of freepik.com!

Halloween weekend is here! I’m sure the kiddies have their costumes picked out and are all ready for trick-or-treating with their friends! (Get ready for the sugar rush, Mom & Dad!) As teenagers, my brother and I thought we would “maximize” the total amount of candy we could get by using pillowcases as treat bags. My mom always laughed as we ran around our neighborhood in our “cool” costumes paired with our embarrassing Power Rangers or Mickey Mouse pillowcases. (Looking back, I totally see why she thought it was funny at the time. We looked like fools!) At this age, I find myself looking forward to seeing the little kids in my neighborhood going around for candy as opposed to getting dressed up and going out myself. I get excited every time the doorbell rings and I grab the candy bowl with a huge smile on my face. The little babies in costumes are THE BEST! So precious!

If you’re crafty and creative like myself, it might be fun to try your hand at making bags for your little ones to take along for the night! With just your choice of fabric, webbing, scissors, and thread, you can easily put together a one-of-a-kind piece. I promise, it is much easier than you’d think!

I came across this great DIY treat bag project from Daydream Believers! Follow the simple steps provided and get crafting! Click the link for complete instructions and supplies needed!

For the coolest Halloween fabrics, be sure to check out our online store! Below are my favorite prints! They would be AWESOME for this project!

Game On!

Today’s blog post is on behalf of our new employee, Briana! Enjoy!

It’s officially fall, which means football season is here! Being a local New Jersey girl, I have to root for the New York Jets. (Let’s see what this season brings…) Sundays spent with friends, family, good food, & a big screen TV is one of my favorite weekend activities!

Sometimes I like to switch it up and step away from watching the big game. I was looking for ways to stay active and involved during the season. What better way to show support for your favorite NFL team than to make a fabric football for the kids?

These fabric footballs are super simple and will feature the team fabric of your choice! Below is step-by-step instructions on how to make this at-home craft. I have included instructions as well as the football-shaped pattern for you to use. You can create your own of course if you would like a larger or smaller piece. Be sure to check out our wide selection of officially license NFL team fabrics by Fabric Traditions! Available at the Fabric Textile Products, Inc. webstore!

Summer Decor Trend: Cabana Stripes

Cabana Stripe tablecloth by Fabric Textile Products, Inc. (Available in assorted sizes & colors!)

When we think of summer decor, usually the first thing that comes to mind is coastal or nautical motifs. Throw in the occasional marine animal print and you have “summer”. This year though, the decor trends have changed slightly. One of the hottest summer decor trends this year is something you have probably seen a million times before and paid it no mind – a cabana stripe. Yup, that’s it. A simple stripe.

Throw pillows, table cloths, placemats, beach towels, tote bags, umbrellas, & so much more.  This classic stripe is EVERYWHERE. It’s simple, classic, & timeless. The cabana stripe can be in any color, but most common tends to be a nice black and white or a royal blue and white combo. The stripe can be small or large and it most commonly runs vertically. These stripes can be seen in almost every store you walk into – H & M, Home Goods, Pottery Barn, Target, Walmart, Pier 1, Kohl’s, the list goes on and on and on. It is also featured in more magazines than I can count on my 2 hands. Have you seen the latest issue of HGTV magazine?

I am a lover of stripes in general, but I absolutely love a good cabana stripe. It works year round, not just in the summer, and it can really bring life to a room. I prefer black and white everything, but this year we decided to branch out a bit at Fabric Textile Products, Inc. and offer a very wide variety of cabana stripe linens. Our 3 inch cabana stripe is printed on Milliken Signature Polyester and then in turn made into pillow covers, tablecloths, & table runners. We currently offer  12 colors and are always adding more to the mix!

Available in  Black, Navy, Royal, Pale Pink, Fuchsia, Red, Gray, Yellow, Khaki, Orange, Turquoise, & Lime Green.

Below I have included some of the fabulous cabana stripe products I have while shopping the internet! Check them out!

Americana on my mind!

Hello friends! It has been a while since I wrote to you all, but have no fear. I am back! We have made so many changes around the shop here at Fabric Textile Products, Inc. and things are better than ever. We have started introducing new test products and so far our customers are pleased. We love when you guys are happy! Every week I will do my best to update you all on new products and prints we have added to the shop. For now, I just wanted to take a time to highlight one of my absolute favorite items – our American Stars Napkins! This is now the second year that we have offered these patriotic napkins and we cannot keep them on the shelves. I’m serious, ya’ll. These napkins are the real deal!

With Memorial Day and July 4th right around the corner, these napkins are perfect for cookouts, parties, and BBQs with the family. They launder well and will last you for many years to come. The navy and white star design resembles that of our gorgeous nation’s flag. I personally like pairing them with a red and white picnic check tablecloth for a real down home Americana vibe! This year we have also introduced the matching table runner! Those will be available in the shop very soon!

Seriously though. How adorable are these little guys?!

Fabric Scraps: To keep or not to keep? That is the question!

DSCN1685

We’ve all been there before. You finish a really great project. You notice a slight defect in the print. You have just enough to material with a little excess. You trim. You snip. You cut. At the end, you are left with a literal bundle of joy – a pile of fabric scraps, or remnants, if you prefer. (I like to think of them as leftovers, personally.) They’re large. They’re small. Some are square. Some are not so uniform. There are strips. They are pieces of all shapes and size. At this time you are left with the age-old question…What do I do with these?

As Hamlet infamously asked “To be, or not to be- that is the question…”, you yourself may be replacing “be” with “keep”. Leftover fabric is always useful in my opinion. There’s always something that can be done, so the pieces are not completely wasted. I have surfed the lovely web and came across several fun ideas for your little bundles of textile joy. Below is a list of my favorite ones. I have included all of my finds, so just click on the picture for the original tutorial link! Give them a try!

There are an infinite number of ways to put your fabric remnants to good use. These are just a few of my favorite projects, but the possibilities are endless. They can be used for crafting projects, home décor projects, no-sew projects, personalized gifts, and so much more. A little creativity can go a long way! Be sure to tell me about your favorite ways to use your fabric leftovers too!

Warm Regards,

Joanna

earth day

Earth Day is just a week away! The 45th holiday will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 22nd. We constantly hear about the push to Go Green and keep Mother Earth looking her best, but how many of us actually make the changes necessary to join the worldwide initiative? I personally am guilty of leaving lights on in my bedroom when I’m not home or letting the water run while brushing my teeth, but I would like to be better about this sort of thing. Small simple changes can make a big difference!

I got to thinking about what I can do around my home. I live in a household made up of 6 grown adults. One can only imagine how many paper napkins and towels we go through in a week’s time. Additionally, all 6 of us bring our own bagged lunches to work daily. My mother is constantly picking up paper products and brown lunch bags on her weekly trip to the super market. These products can be super expensive and super wasteful. I decided to initiate a few small changes in what we do around our home and I’d like to invite all of you to do the same.

cloth napkins

#1. Say goodbye to disposable paper napkins and say hello to cloth napkins instead! Not only are paper napkins expensive, but they are just plain blah. Instead of a boring folded white piece of paper, why not bring the kitchen table to life with some fun prints or colors? With so many different styles, colors, sizes, materials, and prints to choose from the possibilities are limitless. Feeling crafty? Use your leftover fabric scraps from previous sewing projects and make your own! Here you will find an excellent step-by-step guide to sewing your own cloth napkins. This is an easy project for beginning sewers! If you’re willing to splurge a little, check out the high-end collections at the nearest Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel store. Want to be trendy without breaking the bank? Even local retail chains like Target & Walmart have a wide array of affordable cloth napkins and linens.  Cloth napkins aren’t just for fancy restaurants or special occasions anymore. Make them an everyday staple in your home. They can be washed and reused for many years to come. A little investment will save you so much money in the long run. Toss them in the washer and clean using an eco-friendly detergent. Skip the softener to ensure maximum absorbency over time.

dish towel

#2. Replace paper towels with kitchen rags and dish cloths. I know the Brawny guy is super hot in those TV commercials and Bounty claims to be the “quilted quicker picker upper”, but they are not necessary in the kitchen anymore. As I explained with the switch to cloth napkins, these towels are cost-effective and reusable. Kitchen spills and dirty dishes will get the same treatment as before, but the environment will thank you later. From the dollar store to Kmart to Macy’s, you can get yourself a nice bulk set of towels to fit your budget and still match your kitchen décor.

a98535_0701_blueplaid_xl #3.  Pack a snack in style. Lunch bags aren’t just for the kiddies anymore. Just think about how many brown paper lunch bags are tossed in the trash everyday. School cafeterias, employee lounges, public trash cans, etc. We live in a society full of people on-the-go. More often that not, we are forced to bring our meals with us and eat somewhere other than our own home. Sure you can buy a lunch bag, but I think a DIY bag is much cooler and more personable. With just some oil cloth, scissors, and a sewing machine, you can create a lunch bag for every member of the family. I suggest oil cloth because it is durable, water proof, and can withstand many uses. Spills? Not a problem. Just use some warm soapy water and sponge to easily clean those messes that yesterday’s pasta primavera left behind! Oil cloth can be purchased online or at your local craft store in a wide variety of prints and colors. If you don’t have the sewing skills needed, no problem. You can purchase some great custom bags from independent shops on Etsy and eBay at a great price. Pack a light snack or a heavy lunch in a hurry without wasteful paper products. Click on the picture above for more information on how you can create these lovely lunch sacks.

We live on a beautiful planet. Let’s keep it that way. Just by making a few changes, we can make a big difference in the world around us. Don’t use wasteful paper napkins and towels. You will be doing something good for the environment and also keeping your wallet happy. Recycle old fabric scraps and reuse these items for years to come. We should be mindful everyday and uphold the values of Earth Day everyday.

I hope I have inspired you to make a few adjustments in your home as well! Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
