20 not-so-traditional Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

momMother’s Day is Sunday May 10th! I firmly believe in recognizing all that my mother does for me every day, but it’s nice to have an extra special day just for her. Mother’s Day is a time for us all to say thank you to the special women in our lives (mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, friends, etc.) and show them how much they are appreciated. I like to change it up a bit each year and treat my mother to something different. Of course there is the traditional sappy Hallmark card and flowers, but I like to keep things interesting.

This year I decided to buy concert tickets to see one of my mom’s favorite country music duos (Florida Georgia Line anyone?). She will be spending the weekend with her best friend at the shore for the concert and enjoying a mini vacation. She works so hard every day to provide for my family and she could use a few days to herself to unwind and have fun. I’m sure we all could say the same the special women in our lives.

For this week’s post, I decided that I wanted to highlight some great Mother’s Day gift ideas. Flowers and greeting cards are sweet, but sometimes it’s fun to go beyond that! Below you will see my list of 20 ideas. Hopefully it serves as a source of creativity and inspiration for you this Mother’s Day!

  1. Concert tickets for her and a friend
  2. Theater tickets for her and a friend
  3. treat her to brunch at her favorite restaurant
  4. Alex and Ani bangle (My mom loves these! http://www.alexandani.com)
  5. Spa day
  6. Mani & pedi
  7. BYOB group painting class (Pinot’s Palette is my favorite! http://www.pinotspalette.com)
  8. Fruit bouquet (www.ediblearrangements.com)
  9. personalized stationary
  10. framed art print(s) of work by her favorite artist
  11. Birchbox subscription (www.birchbox.com)
  12. day or weekend trip to her favorite local travel destination
  13. Winery/Vineyard Tour
  14. Yoga class registration
  15. gardening tools and starter seeds
  16. hand-crafted jewelry (Etsy is the best source)
  17. Custom quilt using old t-shirts (check out kentshirtquilt.com)
  18.  Painted portrait of her pet(s)
  19. Polaroid camera (yes, they still exist!)
  20. last, but certainly not least, a heartfelt “thank you” for everything she does

Every Mother is different. Each has her own personality, style, hobbies, and wit. Giver her a gift that she will enjoy, but most importantly, let her know she is loved and appreciated. A little thank you can make all the difference.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Enjoy your day this weekend!

Fiesta Fun Facts!

cinco-de-mayo-use

Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May) is just under a week away! Before you know it, the day-long fiesta will be in full swing complete with music, parades, dancing, & tons of delicious Mexican foods. I thought it would be fun to share a little bit of information about the holiday with all of you as you prepare for your own celebrations and gatherings!

  • Just in case your Spanish is a little rusty, Cinco de Mayo simply means the 5th of May.
  • Cinco de Mayo does not celebrate Mexican Independence, a very popular misconception. Mexican Independence Day is actually celebrated annually on September 16th. Instead, May 5th recognizes an unlikely victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. For this reason, the holiday is primarily observed in the state of Puebla.
  • The largest Cinco de Mayo celebration takes place in….Los Angeles, CA. Yes, that’s correct. Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated in Mexico the way it is celebrated here in the United States. In the U.S. we use the day as an excuse to eat Mexican food and party, but in Mexico the party is much different. There are reenactments of the Battle of Puebla, parades, speeches, and more.
  • Everyone does not eat tacos on Cinco de Mayo. In fact, the traditional dish served on the 5th in Mexico is Mole Pablano. Fun fact: Americans consume roughly 81 million avocados on this day. (That’s a lot of guac!)

I hope you all have learned a little bit more about this fun holiday! I am looking forward to the delicious food and spending a fun evening with friends and family. Although the celebration differs among the 2 countries, I enjoy any day that gives me a reason to enjoy tacos without feeling guilty! Enjoy the day!

Prepping for an Egg-cellent Easter

Easter decoration

Today’s post is all about our picks and tips for an Eggcellent Easter celebration! (Yes, you read that correctly. I said EGG instead of EX.) With just a few days between you and the spring time holiday, the heat is on. How many guests are coming? Do I have enough desserts? Did the kids dye their eggs yet? Will I need more grass to fill the baskets? How are we on prizes for the egg hunt? The checklist goes on and on.

My favorite part about Easter was always the fun projects with my brother and parents. We both loved to dye a dozen eggs and eat bags upon bags of Cadbury Mini Eggs. Thank goodness my mom was forgiving because after about 20 minutes of “expressing” ourselves through our egg art, the kitchen table was usually a few more colors than she had remembered it to be. Kids will be kids after all.

#1. No-mess Easter eggs. (You will thank me later.) The no-dye trend is the norm this year. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and saying goodbye to those store bought egg dye kits. You’d be surprised to see how many different ways to decorate and color an egg without messy dyes. Below are some of my favorites. Check out the awesome article from Better Homes & Gardens featuring 24 ideas here.

#2. Ditch the basket. Get the kids egg hunt ready with this adorable DIY tote bag by Martha Stewart. Instead of using your traditional baskets, let the kids gather their eggs and take home their goodies in a fun tote bag this year.  With just a few necessary items, this project could not be easier. Try personalizing the bags with each child’s name for an added touch!

#3. Keep it simple & keep it subtle. Spring is the season of beautiful pastel colors. Summer is known for the bright bold shades, but spring is on the quieter side. Dress your holiday table with light colors for a refreshing clean look. My favorite colors for my Easter table are lavender, sky blue, and pale yellow. What about you?!

#4. A touch of tulips. I love to have fresh flowers on my holiday table. Although the typical Easter flower is the Lily, I think a beautiful bouquet of tulips looks great. Mix a few colors and turn them into a centerpiece!

#5. Let there be peeps. No explanation needed here, folks. It just wouldn’t be much fun without ’em.

Joanna

We’re getting our Shamrock Shake on!

shamrock shake

Yes, I said it. We are getting our shamrock shake on. It just rolls off the tongue.

Happy March everyone! One of my favorite holidays is just around the corner. What holiday you may ask? St. Patrick’s Day that is! You may also be wondering why I enjoy it so much. Am I Irish? Italian. Do I like the color green? Not a fan. Do I enjoy eating meet & potatoes served with a perfectly chilled beer? Absolutely! Who doesn’t?! I can go on and on about why I love the day so much, but I don’t want to bore you all to death talking about myself. Whether you choose to celebrate St. Patty’s Day or not is all your own. Here at Fabric Textile Products, Inc. we are firm believers in the idea that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and we are here to help with your holiday party planning! We are also HUGE fans of the delicious minty-fresh treat that McDonald’s rolls out for just a brief time every year… the legendary Shamrock Shake. Get your green sweaters and bagpipes ready! We’re having a party!

It’s all about the green. Green clothing. Green decorations. Green drinks. Green rivers (If you live in the windy city, that is). Green everything. Instead of going overboard on the festive color this year, why not try a fun pop of color on your dinner table? Instead of bringing out Grandma’s favorite green tablecloth, napkins, and plates this year, try something a bit more subtle. I like the idea of a bold napkin on a traditional white plate. The good people at Better Homes and Gardens featured a how-to video on the four leaf clover napkin fold in 2010. I thought this was perfect!

clover napkin

How adorable is the clover fold?! I absolutely love it. Click on the photo above to watch the full DIY tutorial video. I would show you myself, but I would probably embarrass myself. You could try this napkin with any one of our beautiful Milliken Signature Dinner Napkins. I suggest Fern or Clover, but you could also use Hunter or Forest too.

If origami or folding intimidates you, a simple alternative works just as well. Try one of these other options for a fun touch of green!

If you are feeling crafty and would like to make your own, we have a great selection of cotton prints by Quilting Treasures in stock as well!  All items mentioned can be purchased directly from our shop. Hopefully you have gotten some ideas for your holiday table and are feeling lucky!

Enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day everyone! I know I will!

Love is in the Air!

ribbon heart

Ahh yes! Love is in the air! The “most romantic” day of the year is just about here. Cue the last minute trips to the gas station for roses and the 24 hour pharmacy for the anything that resembles a heart-shaped box of sugary treats. Don’t forget the Hallmark card while you’re there! We all kid and joke, but deep down in our hearts we do what we can to appreciate our loved ones. If that entails a $9.95 box of chocolates than so be it. It’s the thought that counts, right? Not everyone will be spending Valentine’s Day with their sweetie at a super fancy restaurant with a name you most likely cannot pronounce, but instead enjoying a quiet night in with friends and family.

Okay, so you’re planning to cook a nice dinner for your family at home. Awesome. The menu is set and the grocery shopping is done. Decorations? A few construction paper hearts made by the kids. Perfect. Now that just leaves the dinner table…

My favorite thing to do for any holiday is exhibiting my origami skills with a festive napkin fold. There are hundreds of ways to fold a napkin and there’s something for everyone, no matter what your skill level is. One of the easiest folds is the classic heart. It’s easy, takes just a few minutes, and will look beautiful on your Valentine’s Day table. No need to spend a ton of money on some new fancy napkins. Use something you already have at home! (You’ll thank me later.)

I decided to take a few of my favorite hemstitch dinner napkins and try my hand at the heart fold. (For the step-by-step tutorial video, click here.) It was super easy and it looks adorable. I paired them with a few different table linens and placed the utensils in different spots. This is a highly versatile look. Be creative! Here a few different looks I tried. Which is your favorite?

If you want to take it a step further, why not make individual place cards for your guests? All you need is a few sheets of construction paper, a pen/marker, and a scissor. It’s a great way to get the little ones involved too! Add the place card to the center of the napkin or to the side of the plate and voila! It’s simple. It’s budget-friendly. It’s festive. It’s perfect.

I wish all of you a very Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope it is filled with love, happiness, and good company! Feel free to share your table decorating ideas with me! We would love to see what you have done!

With love always,
