Spring is upon us and what better time to talk about the 2018 home décor trends we have been seeing around. I will be talking about my top favorite ones and how you can incorporate them into your home. What I love about certain things is you can make the big decision to go more permanent or take baby steps by adding small pieces that can be changed out whenever you want. Check out my favorites below!
Color trend– Sage. This earthy green is a lovely color for any room. If you are looking to update your living room this color goes great with hard wood floors. If you are looking to make subtle changes or less expensive ones you can think about using the above trends on other things. Loving the sage green? Opt for accents for a room such as rug, end tables or pillows.
2. Mixed Metallics – Changing up the handles on your kitchen cabinets is an easy way incorporate this look. If you think that is too much of a commitment you can opt for smaller touches such as a Tea pot or Utensil Holder. This way if you don’t like it or if you like to change things up often there is not too much work involved.
The Herringbone Pattern– This one can be real fun! Below shows a herringbone subway tile backsplash. If you are looking to update your kitchen this is one way to do it. The crisp white is always nice but you can opt for some color as well. If you want to go for something less permanent, you can replace the rug in your living room or hallway with one of this pattern. Patterns are so much fun and I love mixing and matching them.
Colorful Doors– I was always a fan of the bold red front door. What I like about this is it is paint. If you don’t like it or want to change down the road it is not an expensive change. Don’t want to paint it? You can leave it as is and add some other bold color details like in the photo above. Add some colorful flower pots or door mat and you are all set.
Wedding season in is full swing and we are heading into the most popular months. There are many details that go into planning a wedding, and let me tell you not a detail goes unnoticed. An easy detail that can go a long way is how you can fold a napkin. There are a million ways to fold a napkin and each of them are beautiful. I have picked out a few of my favorite napkin folds that I am going to show you how to make.
1. The Bow Napkin Fold
You will need napkin rings for this one.
Start with a square napkin.
Fold the top part down to the middle, then flip the bottom up to the middle.
Fold the left side to the middle, then fold the right side to the middle.
Flip the napkin over.
Pinch in the middle then use the napkin ring you chose.
2. The single Pocket Fold
Place napkin hemmed side down.
Fold napkin in half.
Fold top layer down.
Flip the napkin over.
Fold it in half from right to left.
Fold in half again from right to left.
You can leave it as is or you can add string or ribbon like that image above. This one is perfect if you are having menus put at each seat.
3. The Dramatic Fan
Start with your square napkin face down.
Starting from the bottom make accordion pleats all the way to the top.
From one end, start rolling the napkin, leaving a little bit at the end about 2/3”
Set the napkin upright, gently fan out the small section that was not folded.
Holding on the spiraled section, pull up the beginning edge to form a small peak.
There are many more ways to fold a napkin if the ones above are not what you are looking for. You can’t go wrong with any napkin fold to upgrade your table for your next event. As I mentioned before not a detail goes unnoticed and something like a napkin fold can be what your table was missing. Guests will love the tiny detail. You can use different napkin folds for your home too. Whether it is for a holiday or just a family gathering you can elevate your table with a certain napkin fold. (There are some great ones for the holidays!)
Summer is among us and we are so excited! Summertime is a popular time for weddings, with that being said what are you in store for when attending a wedding this summer?
Bold bright colors will be showcased with flowers, attire and decor. Decor is really important for a wedding, it brings together the whole event. Usually we use a lot of floral for our decor.
This rustic barn wedding used bright florals to liven up the venue. The suspended floral arrangements is something new I have seen. I love it! You can see that they used smaller centerpieces on the table.
Below are some beautiful vibrant color pallets for the summer. (These colors make me want to plan a summer wedding!)
Once you have your venue and date picked out, I think it is very important to pick a color palette. The color palette will get incorporated into invitations, bridal party attire, florals and linens.
Having a theme to your wedding has been more and more popular. The “Rustic Chic” wedding theme has been around for a few years and is still going strong. This theme has evolved each year with new attributes that make it a little bit different year after year. After Pantone released their 2017 color of the year “Greenery” , adding a touch of green has been a must. Brides are opting for more greenery in decor as well as in their flowers.
At last we come to my favorite! Everyone has been loving printed table cloths. Prints are very personal and it shows a lot about the happy couple. Printed table linens can be seen being used at an outdoor wedding as well as indoor wedding. Printed florals, geometric shapes, and stripes are very versatile and mesh well with other accents and decor.
I hope this post brings you inspiration for the special day you are planning. Another tip I have for you is even if you are not planning a wedding these trends can easily be incorporated into home decor trends.
Hosting a brunch for Mother’s Day? I have got some ideas for you! If the weather is going to be nice, plan to have your bunch outdoors. I have some great inspiration photos to help you set the perfect outdoor table. You don’t have to use throw away items just because you are outdoors. A simple tale runner or table cloth can be a great add to your outdoor dining table.
Stripes are in right now and those colors are a perfect match for a Mother’s Day celebration. This table setting is very simple. Look at those centerpieces!
Prints and colors set a BOLD table. These bright colors are perfect for an outdoor brunch.
Simple is the perfect way to go. The runner is the vocal point on this table. I love the way they tied off the ends. A few candle jars make for a pretty centerpiece option.
What will we be seeing a lot of this spring? Well, we believe that what we have been seeing on the runways is an early indicator of trends from clothing all the way to home decor, bright colors and mix and match patterns are gaining traction! These trends are easy to work with and can turn your home into a beautiful work of art. We see spring in our future and now we want to start to brighten things up in our home!
Pantone has released their color of 2017, called Greenery. It is a refreshing color that is easy on the eye and great on the walls. (Like the image above) You can also add smaller amounts of this bright, refreshing green to your home decor items and it would have the same brightening effects. Below you see those kitchen stools are the bright colors that were added to this beautiful white kitchen. Simple yet BOLD. I love seeing different ways you can add color to any room in your home.
This colored subway tile back splash is subtle yet eye catching! You can match or accent the tile with other kitchen items. Helpful tip- have your table linens match or complement the back splash.
Along with the pantone colors of 2017 you will be seeing many other bright colors. Don’t go with the old run of the mill dark colored couch. Make a statement with a brightly colored one. (Like the image above) Adding bright colored furniture is an easy way to bring color into your room. (It doesn’t involve paint!) No mess here! In the above picture you also see that the pillows are all different patterns. Mixing and matching the right patterns together somehow make it look like they belong together. Those pillows, such a simple accent piece that transforms this couch and living room. If you are up for a do it yourself project you can make pillows like the ones in the above picture. Fabric Textile Products Inc. has a wide range of fabrics that could be used for a DIY pillow project. I have also seen this being done in other rooms too! The options are endless when it comes to these trends. Even if you have a low budget but still want to freshen a room up in your home, you can! I am looking forward to taking these ideas and updating rooms in my home. As a renter I cannot paint the walls so I will be choosing to use smaller accents to help accomplish a bold look.
Here are those bright colors I was talking about again! The products in the above image are from www.fabrictextileproducts.com. Don’t they just SCREAM Springtime! Polka Dots are a favorite of mine. I love the bright colors of the table runner above. This is the perfect runner to transition into spring. Not ready for bright colored walls? Linens are the best way to bring in some colors and patterns. What is great about using items such as table linens to add something new to your dining room/ kitchen is they are not permanent. They are easy to switch when you want to go for a new look. I love updating my kitchen linens for each season. Spring I am ready for you! You can shop this print and many others now! Click Here
Now that your Sunday’s have opened up why not task yourself with a fun new project this weekend. Do you have empty wall space that could use an addition? I came across a tutorial on how to make wall canvas art using fabric! (I am definitely trying this out this weekend!) I am always looking for ways to spruce up my home. As a renter I am always cautious about what I hang on the walls. A project like this is not permanent and is renter friendly.
This project lets you be creative with mixing and matching patterns and prints. What a fun way to update a room to make it look new! You can pick super cool fabrics here. (I love mix and matching.) Add pops of color and you have your own master piece! This project will have all your guests talking about how amazing the room looks with your wall art. (Its up to you if you want to tell them how you did it!)
Now lets get started! Here is what you will need;
Canvases in various sizes. How many is up to you. It depends how much wall space you have. You would want at-least 2-3 different sizes.
Fabrics! How many you want is up to you. You would want about 2-3 different fabrics which you can find here.
It is way too cold to want to leave the house. These winter months can be the perfect time to find a new hobby. I am sharing three easy projects with you today. These projects will have you feeling productive ..(while still in your pj’s) Numbers two and three might just be my favorites! These are the perfect weekend crafts. Don’t forget to shop our storefor the fabrics you need for your project.
When we think of summer decor, usually the first thing that comes to mind is coastal or nautical motifs. Throw in the occasional marine animal print and you have “summer”. This year though, the decor trends have changed slightly. One of the hottest summer decor trends this year is something you have probably seen a million times before and paid it no mind – a cabana stripe. Yup, that’s it. A simple stripe.
Throw pillows, table cloths, placemats, beach towels, tote bags, umbrellas, & so much more. This classic stripe is EVERYWHERE. It’s simple, classic, & timeless. The cabana stripe can be in any color, but most common tends to be a nice black and white or a royal blue and white combo. The stripe can be small or large and it most commonly runs vertically. These stripes can be seen in almost every store you walk into – H & M, Home Goods, Pottery Barn, Target, Walmart, Pier 1, Kohl’s, the list goes on and on and on. It is also featured in more magazines than I can count on my 2 hands. Have you seen the latest issue of HGTV magazine?
I am a lover of stripes in general, but I absolutely love a good cabana stripe. It works year round, not just in the summer, and it can really bring life to a room. I prefer black and white everything, but this year we decided to branch out a bit at Fabric Textile Products, Inc. and offer a very wide variety of cabana stripe linens. Our 3 inch cabana stripe is printed on Milliken Signature Polyester and then in turn made into pillow covers, tablecloths, & table runners. We currently offer 12 colors and are always adding more to the mix!
Available in Black, Navy, Royal, Pale Pink, Fuchsia, Red, Gray, Yellow, Khaki, Orange, Turquoise, & Lime Green.
Below I have included some of the fabulous cabana stripe products I have while shopping the internet! Check them out!

Summer has officially begun! Enjoy that warm weather, sleep in, and check back here with me on the FTP blog! I have lots more great stuff to share with all of you!
Susan and I officially met in the spring of 2012. She was hired to be the newest Assistant General Manager at my job, which meant she would be my direct supervisor. From day 1, we immediately connected and really hit it off. We both eventually said our goodbyes to the ice rink and embarked on new professional journeys. We have always kept in touch and still remain friends.
In January, Susan decided to open up an Etsy shop, Susan Knittman, and sell handmade knitted goods. While in between jobs, it was a great way for her to keep up with her long-time hobby and also make some extra money in the meantime. From scarves, to headbands, to napkin rings, her shop has it all. With business booming and her shop on the rise, I wanted to share Susan’s shop with all of you.
Susan and I talked over coffee and got to catch up last week. I purchased custom napkin rings from her and I was super excited to see the finished products. They were absolutely adorable and incredibly creative! You don’t see knitted napkin rings every day!
Joanna: “When did you first learn to knit?”
Susan: “I was probably around 12 years old and my mom taught me. First it was needlepoint, then knitting.”
J: “When did you open your Etsy shop? What prompted you to do so?”
S: “January of this year. So 2015. It sounds funny, but every winter I would keep my hands busy by knitting. I would start a new scarf every year. First I started with arm knitting and then needle.”
J: “What types of products do you typically make and sell in the shop?”
S: “Scarves, baby bonnets, blankets, napkin rings, hats, headbands. A little of everything. My best selling items are scarves. I have these really cool asymmetrical scarves that have a few buttons on the side and wraps around. It’s my best seller. “
J: “Have you considered making this a full-time thing (expanding beyond Etsy), or is this just a hobby? Would you eventually like to turn this into a standalone business?”
S: “Personally, I don’t think I have the stamina to do this full time. I did it while I was in between jobs. I am looking to expand and attend craft shows in the fall. There’s some local ones I want to look into. I’ll start small at first. Knitting will stay a side business for now.”
J: “What products are you hoping to add to the store, if any, in the future? Is there something you are hoping to perfect and offer to your customers?”
S: “I want to do a lot more, but I’m not sure of the demand for certain items. I have these antique Parisian buttons that I would like to do more with. They are actually from Paris and they were purchased by a family friend in the 70s. She gave them to me. I would love to do more baby bonnets. I did a custom Batman hat for a friend. It looks like there is a lot of superhero-type items in demand. I’m going to start working on Harley Quinn and the Joker hats too. I am very open to custom orders. It’s just about finding the patterns. My brother wants to add some items to his comic book shop too. I did a Batman baby headband so far. It looks like I’ll be doing a lot of superhero items, but I will do whatever is asked of me, and with little turnaround time of course.”
The possibilities are endless. Susan was kind enough to make our napkin rings as a custom order. I was able to choose the colors, styles, & buttons that I wanted. She is willing to do whatever necessary to meet your specific needs. There is a warm knitted gift for everyone! All items are proudly made by Susan in the USA and can be hand washed. I wish her all the best as her business continues to grow! Susan’s products will soon be available for purchase at her brother’s comic book store, East Side Mags, as well. Be sure to check them out if you’re in the Montclair, NJ neighborhood!
Memorial Day weekend is here and the unofficial start to the summer season has begun! This weekend will be filled with trips to the beach, concerts, BBQ’s, holiday shopping sales, and plenty of fun in the sun. Being from New Jersey, my summer season means several trips down the parkway to the beautiful Jersey Shore. (No, you will not find me “fist pumping” with DJ Pauly D or anything that MTV has led you to believe.) Each shore town has its own identity and is full of beautiful little independent shops. My favorite thing to do while at the shore is to shop for new coastal-inspired items to take home with me and decorate my bedroom with. I am a lover of all things summer. Anchors. Mermaids. Sea shells. Boats. Tropical flowers. Bright colors. I am a fan of it all!
I have compiled a list of my top coastal finds to help get your home summer-ready! There’s something to fit every budget and every interest! It will feel like summer all year round!
I hope you all get to enjoy this holiday weekend with family and friends. My family BBQ is already planned for Sunday! Summer 2015 is almost here! And please, don’t forget your sunblock! Stay safe everyone! 🙂
Warm Regards Always,
